City pushes ecology-minded programs
The citrus smells of the preCalifornia boom no longer permeate Anaheim's smoggy air. Urban overcrowding has taken an obvious toll. But city officials in several departments say they're doing all they can to keep the environment from getting worse, offering free tree planting, carpooling services and an extensive recycling program. Since 1989, when the state mandated cities to reduce the amount of trash taken to the landfill by 25 percent by 1995 and 50 percent by 2000, Anaheim has offered curbside recycling to its residents.
